The 40 percent section: 5 works that demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas using 3-D elements and principles; each shown in 2 views.
Two Views per Work
Each Selected Work is submitted as two images from different angles so scorers can judge it in the round; both views should be strong compositions.
SW Written Requirements
For each work: materials, processes, and a short statement of the idea(s) visually evident (100 characters for idea, plus materials and processes fields).
SW Scoring
Scored holistically on 3-D skills and synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas; works may come from the SI or be separate.
Selection Strategy
Choose the five most resolved works that show range of skill and clear ideas; a piece can appear in both SI and SW.
Skillful Synthesis
Top SW scores require that material choice, process, and idea are inseparable and the 3-D handling is confident.
Documentation Photography
Photograph on a neutral, seamless backdrop with even, soft light; the image is the only thing scorers ever see.
Seamless Backdrop
A curved paper or fabric sweep that removes the floor-wall line so the form reads clearly without distraction.
Lighting for Form
A key light at roughly 45 degrees plus fill reveals volume through gradual shadow; flat front flash kills form.
Camera Height and Angle
Shoot at the height the work is meant to be seen; a slightly raised angle shows the top plane, a low angle monumentalizes.
Depth of Field
Use a smaller aperture (higher f-number) so the whole sculpture is sharp; blurry backs of forms lose information.
Scale Reference
Include dimensions in the data; a scale cue in one image (a hand, a chair) may help but should not distract.
Detail Photography
Macro shots of surface, joint, or glaze; useful in SI and to reinforce craft, though SW requires two views of the whole.
Installation Documentation
For site-specific work photograph the piece in context, showing viewer relationship and space, plus a closer view.
Ephemeral and Kinetic Documentation
Time-based work is documented in stills; choose frames that show change or motion, and describe the duration in processes.
Image Editing Ethics
Crop, adjust exposure, and remove backdrop seams; do not alter the work itself, since the image must truthfully represent the object.
File Specifications
Images upload as JPEG in the AP Digital Portfolio; keep resolution high, landscape or portrait allowed, file size within limits.
Consistency of Documentation
Similar backdrops and lighting across the 5 works make the SW read as a coherent, professional set.
