The portfolio section (5 works, 40%) presenting the student's strongest, most resolved drawings, submitted as high-quality digital images (or physical works for 2-D and Drawing where applicable to a given year's rules).
Selected Works Rubric
Scored on Materials, Processes, and Ideas (skillful synthesis) and on Drawing Skills; each work is judged, and the section receives one score.
Selected Works Statements
For each of the 5 works: idea(s) visually evident (up to 100 characters), materials (100), processes (100), plus dimensions.
Overlap with Sustained Investigation
Selected Works may include pieces from the Sustained Investigation or entirely different work; they need not share a theme.
Resolution
A Selected Work should feel complete: composition, value, and mark-making decisions are carried through with intent.
Skillful Synthesis
The top descriptor for Selected Works: materials, processes, and ideas are integrated with evident skill and purpose.
Drawing Skills in Selected Works
Purposeful mark-making, line, surface, space, light/shade, and composition; readers expect these to be strong in every one of the 5 works.
Range in Selected Works
Five works can show breadth (different media, subjects) or depth (one approach refined); either can score well if each work is strong.
Choosing the Five
Select works that demonstrate the strongest drawing skills and clearest ideas, not necessarily the largest or most time-consuming pieces.
Graphite
Versatile, controllable, and erasable; capable of fine line and smooth tone; sensitive to smudging without fixative.
Charcoal (Willow/Vine and Compressed)
Fast, expressive, and rich in darks; ideal for large-scale gesture and value; requires fixative.
Pen and Ink
Permanent line medium; value is built through hatching, stippling, or wash; rewards decisive marks.
