Materials as Meaning
In AP 3-D the choice of material is itself content: rusted steel, found plastic, or porcelain each carry associations the scorer expects you to use intentionally.
Hand-Building (Ceramics)
Forming clay without a wheel using pinch, coil, and slab techniques; the most common entry into ceramic form.
Pinch Pot
A form opened by pressing the thumb into a ball of clay and pinching walls up evenly; teaches wall thickness control.
Coil Building
Rolling ropes of clay and stacking them, then blending or leaving them visible; allows large, asymmetrical vessels.
Slab Construction
Rolling clay into flat sheets, cutting and joining them at leather-hard stage with score-and-slip; suits boxes and architectural forms.
Score and Slip
Roughening two clay surfaces and applying liquid clay so a joint fuses; skipping it causes cracks in drying and firing.
Wheel Throwing
Shaping clay on a spinning potter's wheel by centering, opening, and pulling walls; produces symmetrical vessels.
Leather-Hard and Bone-Dry
Leather-hard clay is stiff but carvable and joinable; bone-dry is fully air-dried, fragile, and ready for bisque firing.
Bisque and Glaze Firing
First (bisque) firing hardens the clay so it can be glazed; second firing melts glaze into glass. Cone numbers indicate temperature.
Glaze
A glassy coating fused to fired clay for color, sheen, and waterproofing; a surface decision that scorers read as design intent.
Casting
Pouring liquid material (plaster, resin, bronze, concrete) into a mold to reproduce a form; enables multiples and materials that cannot be carved.
Mold Making
Creating a negative of a form in plaster, silicone, or alginate. One-part molds suit simple shapes; multi-part molds handle undercuts.
Undercut
Any part of a form that would lock it inside a mold; solved with multi-piece molds or flexible silicone.
Lost-Wax Casting
A wax model is coated in investment, melted out, and the cavity filled with molten metal; the traditional bronze method.
Carving
Subtractive shaping of wood, stone, plaster, or foam with chisels, rasps, and files; requires planning because material cannot be added back.
Modeling
Shaping pliable material such as clay or wax by hand; additive and reversible, ideal for figurative work over an armature.
Assemblage
Combining found or fabricated objects into a sculpture (Rauschenberg, Nevelson); meaning comes partly from what the objects were.
Found Object / Readymade
An everyday item repurposed as art; Duchamp's readymades opened the door to context and selection as creative acts.

Joinery
Methods for connecting parts: wood joints (miter, dado, mortise and tenon), mechanical fasteners, adhesives, welding, rivets.
Welding and Brazing
Fusing metals with heat; MIG/TIG welding melts base metal, brazing joins with a filler at lower temperature.
Soldering
Joining metal (jewelry, small work) with a low-melt filler alloy; the metal parts themselves do not melt.
Adhesives
Hot glue, PVA, epoxy, contact cement, and cyanoacrylate each suit different materials; wrong adhesive shows as failed joints.
Fiber and Textile Processes

Wire Work

3-D modeling plus 3-D printing, laser cutting, or CNC routing; the AP portfolio accepts digitally fabricated physical work.
3-D Printing
Additive digital manufacturing that builds an object layer by layer from a CAD file; layer lines are a surface consideration.
Laser Cutting
Cutting or engraving flat sheet (wood, acrylic, cardboard) from vector files; often used for stacked or slotted constructions.
Maquette
A small preliminary model used to test form, balance, and proportion before committing to full scale.
Patina
A surface color on metal produced by chemical reaction or age; can be deliberately applied to bronze or steel.
Surface Finishing
Sanding, sealing, painting, waxing, or polishing; unfinished edges and drips read as lack of resolution unless clearly intentional.

Ephemeral Materials
