Data Analysis
The systematic process of organizing, summarizing, and interpreting collected evidence so it can answer the research question.
Descriptive Statistics
Numbers that summarize a dataset, including measures of center such as the mean and measures of spread such as standard deviation.
Inferential Statistics
Procedures that use sample data to draw conclusions about a larger population, always with quantified uncertainty.
Mean
The arithmetic average of a set of values, sensitive to extreme scores.
Median
The middle value when data are ordered, a better center for skewed distributions than the mean.
Mode
The most frequently occurring value, the only center statistic usable with categorical data.
Standard Deviation
A measure of how far values typically fall from the mean; larger values indicate more spread.
Range and Interquartile Range
Spread measures; the range is maximum minus minimum, while the IQR covers the middle 50 percent and resists outliers.
Outlier
An observation far from the rest of the data, which should be investigated and reported rather than silently deleted.
Skew
Asymmetry in a distribution; a long right tail is right-skewed and pulls the mean above the median.
Correlation Coefficient (r)
A number from -1 to 1 describing the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two quantitative variables.
t-Test
An inferential test comparing the means of two groups to judge whether the observed difference is larger than sampling noise would readily produce.
Chi-Square Test
A test of whether observed frequencies across categories differ from what would be expected if the variables were independent.
ANOVA
Analysis of variance, an inferential test comparing means across three or more groups.
p-Value
The probability of obtaining results at least as extreme as those observed if the null hypothesis were true; small values weigh against the null.
Statistical Significance
A result unlikely under the null hypothesis, conventionally p < 0.05; it indicates unlikely-by-chance, not necessarily important.
Effect Size
A measure of how large a difference or relationship is, independent of sample size, which reports practical importance.
Confidence Interval
A range of plausible values for a population parameter, wider when samples are small or variable.

Practical Significance
Whether a statistically detectable effect is large enough to matter for stakeholders in the real world.
Thematic Analysis
A qualitative procedure that codes data, groups codes into themes, and reports themes with supporting excerpts.
Code
A short label attached to a segment of qualitative data marking what it is about, the basic unit of qualitative analysis.
Theme
A pattern of meaning assembled from related codes that speaks directly to the research question.
Illustrative Quotation
A participant excerpt included in the findings as evidence that a reported theme is grounded in the data.
Negative Case
Data that contradict an emerging pattern; reporting and explaining them strengthens rather than weakens credibility.
Member Checking
Returning interpretations to participants to verify that the researcher has represented their meaning accurately.
Findings Section
The part of the paper reporting what the data show, presented without interpretation or argument about implications.
Discussion Section
The section interpreting findings, connecting them to prior literature, and explaining what they mean for the field.
Conclusion Section
The closing section stating the answer to the research question, its limitations, implications, and directions for future research.
Data Visualization
Tables and figures that display patterns clearly; each must be labeled, titled, and referenced in the text.
Figure Caption
Text below or beside a figure that states what is displayed, including units and sample size, so the figure can stand alone.
Cherry-Picking
Reporting only the evidence that supports a preferred conclusion while omitting contrary results, a form of misrepresentation.
Overgeneralization
Claiming findings apply to populations or contexts the study did not sample, one of the most common flaws in student papers.
Correlation Is Not Causation
The principle that co-varying measures do not establish that one produces the other without controlled design or ruling out confounds.
Hedging Language
Careful qualifiers such as 'suggests' or 'is consistent with' that match the strength of a claim to the strength of the evidence.
Academic Voice
A precise, measured register that reports evidence and reasoning rather than personal emotion or persuasion by assertion.
Warrant
The reasoning that explains why a given piece of evidence supports the claim being made about it.
